After all of the Lee County high school football teams are officially done with their seasons, there is one last event for the players — The All-Star Classic sponsored by The Rotary Club of FORT MYERS SOUTH.
This year’s All-Star Classic the game will be played on Wednesday December 13th rather than on 6th
The All-Star Classic banquet date was also changed, moved to December 11th, at the request of the School District. The location for the banquet is yet to be decided.
The game began in 1988. It started with only eight schools and has now grown to 21 from all across Lee County. Throughout the years, the game has grown in popularity and prestige.
Some of the game’s alumni include Jammi German, Jevon Kearse and Sammy Watkins. Successful college and professional players have gone through the All-Star event.
The head coaches in Lee County get together earlier in the year to decide who should play in the game. The event is only for seniors. Each school is automatically allocated two spots. Then, the coaches look at what positions need to be filled and discuss which players best deserve to fill them.
The All-Star Classic serves as a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Fort Myers South. The money raised during the game goes towards student scholarships and other community initiatives around the county.
